We’re looking for submissions for issue 4 on the theme of: MOTION

We’re exploring the dynamic energy of food and culture through motion. Tell us about the journeys, transformations, and movements that shape your culinary world.

Deadline: 31st January

We’d love to see:

  • Personal writing: stories of movement—migration, growth, or action—in your relationship with food

  • Recipes: dishes that reflect transformation or journeys

  • Deep dives: into the motion of ingredients, cuisines, traditions, or techniques

  • Illustrations: capturing the fluidity and rhythm of food in motion

  • Photography: visuals that show food in action

  • Short stories: weaving narratives around movement and food

  • Interviews: with those whose work embodies motion in the culinary arts

Ideas to get you thinking:

  • Food and migration: how movement shapes traditions and recipes

  • The artistry of motion in cooking—kneading dough, tossing woks, or plating dishes

  • Transformational cooking processes like fermentation or caramelisation

  • The journey of ingredients from farm to table

  • Street food, portable meals, and food culture on the go

  • Cultural or personal rituals that involve food and movement

  • The connection between food and emotional or personal growth

  • Change and transformation

Submitting written work?

  • Max word count for long-form pieces (essays/articles/interviews/short stories): 750 words

  • Please send it as a Google Docs/Word file

  • Include an accompanying image if possible

Submitting visual art?

  • Send scans or digitised versions of artwork (e.g., PNG or JPEG for paintings and illustrations)

  • Please ensure that visuals are high-quality and clear

Important Note:

To submit, you must be a person of colour. This space is reserved to celebrate and amplify our voices—please respect that.

chicken + bread is, for now, a one-woman project. While we work towards being able to pay contributors, you will receive a free printed and digital copy if your submission is published.
